Teacher Certification Requirements in the State of Texas

Anyone seeking first time ever educator certification in Texas must pass examinations of professional knowledge and subject matter knowledge approved by the State Board for Educator Certification. These examinations are referred to as TExES exams.

At South Texas Transition to Teaching ACP-LLC our certified teacher/instructors will prepare you for these content area exams including the pedagogical knowledge and professional responsibilities (PPR) needed to become a successful teacher.

In addition to passing the appropriate certification examinations, applicants for a Texas educator certificate must satisfy other requirements prior to becoming a certified teacher such as:

  • complete 300 hours of teacher training in seventeen critical areas

  • 30 hours of field based experience in a Texas public school classroom

  • 80 clock-hours of training prior to student teaching, clinical teaching, or internship

  • Spend a minimum of one academic school year (10 months, 187 days) as a “teacher of record” in a TEA accredited classroom under the tutelage of a certified mentor teacher and a Field Supervisor, both of which South Texas Transition to Teaching ACP-LLC provides.

  • Continued professional development during this induction year.

*As mandated by the Texas Administrative Code Title 19 Part 7, Chapter 228 § 228.35
